Annual Florida Trip Update
I am beginning to think the good Lord is trying to tell me something but I'm not sure exactly what it is. For the second year in a row the day we left for Florida the skies clouded over and rains of biblical proportions started. We left Columbia Tuesday morning in the rain. It rained and rained and every mile we drove it rained harder. By the time we got to Atlanta, the fabled city of legendary traffic jams, it was pouring. After the obligatory hours long stop and go traffic on the Atlanta freeway system we broke free for the final leg to Auburn. By now the windsheild wipers were on full blast and visibility was down to about 50'. If the Lord is trying to tell me something why couldn't he (she?) use a more direct method like a pleasant conversation beside a burning bush or something. We finally made it to Auburn RV Park where we spent an uneventful evening listening to the rain drum on our RV roof. The next day was an interesting day. I have a newer model Garmin GPS this year. The old one kept getting me into trouble in strange places, usually downtown areas of large cities. Apparently there is a setting on the new one that takes you the most complicated way possible. Instead of taking Hwy 331 from Montgomery south this one led us to 231 which I had never heard of of. From there it led to Hwy 87 which led to Hwy 52 which led to Hwy 153 which led us to Hwy 331 which led us to Hwy 98 for the final leg. All of these road would be considered secondary road anywhere in the US. All of this backing and filling and turning in a pouring rain. Everywhere we drove through the Alabama hinterlands farm ponds were pouring over their banks, front yards had ponds standing, brooks turned into streams, streams turned into rivers and rivers overflowed their banks. The good news, unlike South Carolina, their is apparently no shortage of asphalt in Alabama. All the roads we drove on were smooth, recently paved, and pothole free. Because of the rain I suppose, we also met no traffic going either way. If it would have been a sunny day I expect it would have been a very pleasant drive through the scenic Alabama countryside. We are now safely parked in Camp Gulf which is right on the Gulf complete with a beach. The rain hasn't started in yet this morning so maybe we'll get a walk on the beach in. More to come.

Dear Bill & Mary,
ReplyDeleteYou do know there is doplar radar, the local weather report on the news, & the National weather service to check BEFORE you decide what day to start traveling, don't you? Because everyone & their brother knew Monday & Tuesday there was 100 % chance of rain. Columbia also had tornado warnings, thunder & a bit of lightening.
That said, I am thankful to hear you made it safe & sound to AL!
The rest of the week will be a clear, hot Bahama weather pattern for Christmas this year.
Stay safe & enjoy a Merry Christmas!
We miss you but your family will be blessed!
Love, Debby
