Random thoughts on RV travel.

We arrived home safe and sound yesterday after a completely uneventful trip back from Franklin NC. This last trip was the highlight of our RV experience. We have stopped in all sorts of RV campgrounds all the way from the Rocky Mountains, through the  deep south and up to the mountains of North Carolina. Some were good, none were bad and one in particular was great. Our last stop was at Cardinal Ridge Farm in Franklin, NC and it was the highlight of our RV experiences. The downside is that anywhere we go after this will be a let down. In any event, on to the random thoughts. Bigger IS better. The first motorhome we bought was too small. It was, as my occasionally loving wife put it, like living in a hallway. It had no slides and was too short on top of that. I've never heard anyone say they bought too big a motorhome but I've heard a lot of people say they bought one too small. Once you drive a few miles with the bigger coach you forget all about it and it's no worse than driving a large pick up truck. The roads we have been on are all over the place. St. Louis was the worst. I actually feared we would break something going around St. Louis. For the most part the freeways are in better shape than they were 10 years ago. Secondary roads are all over the place too. North Carolina secondary roads are only 8' wide. The RV is 8'5" wide. Meeting a truck on North Carolina secondary roads can be intimidating. Most everywhere else the secondary roads are 12' in each lane. It's the people you meet that make RVing great. Everywhere we went we have met interesting people. Motel people are introverts. They check in, hurry down the hallway, lock their door and that is the last you see of them. RV people park their rigs and then go outside and try to engage other people. Every evening is an excuse to light a campfire and gather round for a gabfest. We stopped at one place on the Florida Gulf coast and before I could hook up my electricity we were invited to a clam bake. All along the Florida Gulf coast there are little fishing and clam harvesting villages. In Colorado Springs they had a steak cook out. One guy sat in front of his motorhome behind a little table with a bucket of ice that contained bottles of beer and wine. Stuck in the bucket he had a sign that read " Will Trade Drinks For Conversation. A word of caution is in order here. If you put RV in the sentence everything involving repairs and upkeep costs twice as much and takes three times as long. Having said that I'm a happy camper and looking forward to our next trip. As usual I'll keep you posted
