Ireland Day 5 Comments
Day 5 in Ireland we spent exploring Kinsale and the surroundings. The day was started with a gourmet breakfast at Rivermount B&B. I had scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. Absolutely first rate. The Irish sure know how to cook. From there we walked the streets of Kinsale. The pictures of the old church I posted over 800 years old. The church was built in 1200 on the site of a church that had been built in 800 and torn down to make way for the new one. Time has a different meaning in Europe. We have no conception of living in a place that goes back thousands of years. After walking the streets of Kinsale we drove around the surrounding area. They have a golf course built on the cliffs along the ocean. I don't know about being the most beautiful golf course in the world but it sure would rank as the scariest. Some of the greens just ended at a cliff with hundreds of feet drop. After that we toured Charles Fort which is the remnants of a fort the British built to protect from invasion by sea. The size and scale of the fort is incredible. I would love to know how many men worked on the site putting all the bricks and stones in place. The history of the fighting in Ireland is something I have to study up on. It seems they have been fighting the British for the last 1000 years. The women did some shopping in Kinsale in the afternoon and we finished off the day with one of the best meals I have eaten in a long time. The little place was called The Shack but the food was real gourmet cooking at it's best. I had some kind of broiled Hake. Photo enclosed below as is a picture of the dessert which was cheesecake flavored with Baily's Irish Cream. Below you will find some pictures of the B&B and some of the rooms. Fabulous accomodations. The owner has a young daughter that is into horse jumping competition. Photos below of the daughter and a friend of hers with their horses. All in all a splendid day.

Yes, the Irish have had to suffer the raw invasion of Britain for many ancient years. Their property, status, political votes & country was unfairly taken. It is a sad story. But it also shows how brave & resilient they are.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean by walking in a country that has an ancient feel. Touring England & the Grand Cathedrals leave you in awe of the skill, artistry & workmanship of these amazing buildings.
Meanwhile back at the ranch we have a slight chance of rain today & a better one on Sunday.
Columbia is bursting at the seams with activities; Okra Strut, Italian Festival downtown, farmers market fall plant sale, art show at Rosewood, etc. something for everyone!
Enjoy & continue to experience the Irish grand tour. Your new day awaits you!
